07:00 – Pick-up from your hotel in Istanbul and departure towards İznik
Enjoy a scenic drive along the Sea of Marmara and the lush countryside of northwestern Anatolia. Your expert guide will provide a historical introduction to ancient Nicaea, once a major city of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire.
09:30 – Arrival in İznik (ancient Nicaea)
Begin exploring this sacred city where two Ecumenical Councils of Christianity were held:
The First Council of Nicaea (325 AD), where the Nicene Creed was established
The Seventh Council (787 AD), pivotal in the restoration of icon veneration during the Iconoclast controversy
Visit the Hagia Sophia of Nicaea – not to be confused with Istanbul’s – originally built in the 4th century, rebuilt by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century. It served as a Christian cathedral, later converted to a mosque, and still preserves early Byzantine architectural elements and fresco fragments.
10:30 – Walk along the ancient city walls and pass through the Roman gates
The fortifications date back to the 3rd century and were restored multiple times by Byzantine emperors. Your guide will explain their role in protecting the city during various sieges, including during the First Crusade.
11:00 – Panoramic stop by Lake Iznik (Askania)
This large freshwater lake served as a natural defense for the city and was mentioned in Byzantine texts. Enjoy a peaceful break with views across the water, once patrolled by Byzantine ships.
11:30 – Visit to an Iznik ceramic workshop
Learn about the revival of Byzantine artistic traditions in Ottoman İznik tile-making, inspired by earlier Roman-Byzantine motifs. A live demonstration reveals the intricate process of hand-painted tiles, still made using centuries-old techniques.
12:15 – Departure for Bursa
A 90-minute drive takes you to the first Ottoman capital, built on land once under Byzantine rule.
13:45 – Lunch break in Bursa (optional – local restaurant)
Enjoy authentic Turkish cuisine in a traditional setting.
14:30 – Visit the Grand Mosque of Bursa (Ulu Camii)
While an Ottoman structure, Ulu Camii was heavily inspired by Byzantine basilicas in its spacious, domed design. Your guide will connect architectural transitions from Byzantium to early Ottoman forms.
15:00 – Taste Turkish Delight at a historical shop
This stop highlights the cultural continuity between Byzantium and Ottoman culinary heritage, including the influence of Byzantine desserts in court cuisine.
15:30 – Free time at Koza Han Silk Bazaar
Once a vital link in the Silk Road, this historic market preserves Bursa’s role as a medieval trade center between East and West – including trade with Constantinople.
Optional (Winter Only):
16:30 – 18:00 – Uludağ Cable Car Ride
Ascend to the legendary Mount Olympus of Mysia, known in Byzantine sources as a monastic retreat. In the 9th–12th centuries, Uludağ was home to hermits and monasteries tied to Orthodox mysticism. Weather permitting, enjoy stunning views over the Marmara region.
